If you are planning a wedding in Colorado, you have probably fallen in love with the sweeping plains or the majestic mountains or the red rocks, or maybe you want to have it all and mix in a little city skyline as well. Colorado offers so much to choose from as far as scenery, it’s no wonder that so many couples opt for an outdoor wedding.

But, if you have spent enough time in Colorado to fall in love with the scenery, then you have probably spent enough time here to experience all four of our seasons, which usually occur simultaneously.

So how can you take advantage of the beautiful vistas and account for every weather contingency? I have some tips to consider when planning your dream outdoor wedding, no matter where.

Chilly and Wet

Ah, springtime in the Rockies. A magical time. But also the season where Colorado gets the most snow.

Shelter

Include a waterproof tent or awning. Some, but not all rental tents are specially treated or even made of clear plastic to make sure your guests have a place to stay nice and dry. Be sure to ask about the type of tent you are renting. And take waterflow into consideration when putting up your tent. You don’t want to set up in a low spot and have your guests sloshing around.

Heating lamps

Take the chill off with heating lamps or even a bonfire (if your venue will allow it). You can’t just rely on the open bar to keep people warm. Plus, the warming stations make great places sforror people to mingle.

Blankets and throws

An inexpensive option, a blanket to trow over your lap during the ceremony or dinner can make all the difference. Add a personal touch by purchasing them in your color pallet or adding a monogram. Boom, instant party favor, and who doesn't love an extra blanket?

Umbrellas

Another comfort item that can double as a party favor, these are a must if there is a chance of rain. Especially if you have out of town guests who probably didn't ring one from home and don't want to be running all over trying to find one. Opt for clear ones so your guest can cuddle up without blocking the view.

Warm Weather

Water stations and fans

You have put a ton of thought into refreshments at the reception, but don't forget about providing water during the ceremony. And if you don't have printed programs to hand out, consider providing small hand fans. The people sitting next to your sweaty second cousin at dinner will thank you.

Sunscreen and insect repellent

This probably isn’t something most people think to put on while getting ready for a big event, but with all those bare shoulder dresses, your guests are sure to start turning pink quickly. Plus a lot of out of town people don’t know that the high elevation in Colorado makes those UV rays stronger. For the bugs, I recommend going with the plastic bracelet kind, that way you don't end up smelling like summer camp all evening long.

Other things to consider

If possible, I recommend touring your venue at roughly the time of day of your event. Keep in mind where the sun will be: will it be shining directly in our eyes or will it be chilly in the shade? Look for parking conditions as what the weather will be, maybe your guests will need a heads up that the road is steep and slippery in the snow. Make note of any dirt parking areas or paths that might get muddy.

Also, I always recommend table cloth clips, no matter what season, because the wind in Colorado can come suddenly from out of nowhere.
